Sarah reached out to me after her 32 year-old gelding, Sugar, had a couple of colic episodes. Sugar had been a part of Sarah’s life for almost 20 years, and she wanted to capture their story in his later years. Sarah also took the opportunity to get portraits taken with her eventing partner and Sugar’s “little brother”, James. We had garlands made for each of her boys by Beautiful Wild Design featuring peonies and ranunculus.
Sugar passed a little less than a year after her shoot. Although he is no longer with her, these photos will live on to tell a portion of their story. The portion where she got to care for him after the years he had taken care of her. It was so apparent from the start of the session the love Sugar had for Sarah. It was honor to capture that special connection and hearing Sarah’s words, “thank you, for capturing us so perfectly” mean the world to me.
“Oh how we had grown. Thanks for sticking with me through my awkward stage, bug. I still cry a little everyday when I think of you. But that just means I loved you fiercely and how lucky am I for that?” – Sarah and Sugar, her best friend for almost 20 years.
